Most Rev. Pierre (Roland Pierre) DuMaine
Founding Bishop of San José (1981–1999)
Appointed on January 27, 1981, Bishop Pierre DuMaine led the newly created Diocese of San José through its formative years, establishing the essential structures, offices, and ministries needed to serve a rapidly growing Catholic community in Silicon Valley. Previously an Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco, he brought a pastor’s heart and a teacher’s mind, contributing nationally to conversations on science, culture, and faith. He guided parish development, supported Catholic education, and fostered lay leadership. Bishop DuMaine retired in 1999 and died on June 13, 2019.

Most Rev. Patrick J. McGrath
Bishop of San José (1999–2019); Coadjutor (1998–1999)
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Patrick Joseph McGrath was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1970, earned a doctorate in canon law in 1977, and served as Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco from 1989 to 1998 before being named Coadjutor and then Bishop of San José. His two decades of leadership emphasized Catholic education, stewardship, parish vitality, and collaborative ministry across a diverse local church. He retired in 2019 and died on May 7, 2023, remembered for steady pastoral care and a welcoming spirit.

Most Rev. Thomas A. Daly
Auxiliary Bishop of San José (2011–2015)
A Bay Area native and priest of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, Bishop Thomas Anthony Daly was ordained in 1987 and served as parish pastor, archdiocesan vocations director, and president of Marin Catholic High School before his episcopal ministry. Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of San José in 2011, he assisted the diocese with confirmations, priestly support, Catholic schools, and seminary formation during a period of rapid regional growth. In 2015 he was appointed the seventh Bishop of Spokane, where he continues to emphasize evangelization, vocations, Catholic education, and parish life.

Most Rev. Oscar Cantú, S.T.D.
Bishop of San José (2019–present); Coadjutor (2018–2019)
Bishop Oscar Cantú became the third Bishop of San José on May 1, 2019, after service as Coadjutor beginning in 2018. A native of Houston, he was ordained in 1994, served as Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio (2008–2013), and then as Bishop of Las Cruces (2013–2018). In San José he has focused on spiritual renewal, evangelization, the Eucharist, and outreach to families, youth, and young adults, while contributing nationally through leadership in Hispanic ministry and statewide through service with the California Catholic Conference.
