1998

  • is installed as San José’s 2nd Bishop

2000

  • JP II proclaims Jubilee Year for the universal Church
  • presides over first ILM (Institute for Leadership and Ministry) class graduation; dedicates Holy Spirit School, newest Catholic school built in the diocese

2001

  • 911 Terrorist Attacks – Bishop PJ’s Statement 
  • Sacred Heart Nativity School for boys opens; Christ the King Parish is dedicated

2005

  • Pope Saint John Paul II dies and he is succeeded by the late Pope Benedict XVI
  • elevates Korean Community Mission to Holy Korean Martyrs Parish 
  • ordains the 1st class of Permanent Diaconate for the diocese

2006

  • 5th anniversary of DSJ 
  • makes pilgrimage to all diocesan parishes
  • Our Lady of Grace Nativity School for girls opens
  • leads the “Rooted in Faith” Capital Campaign to raise significant funds to create a Santa Clara County Catholic Foundation to support Catholic ministries in the diocese
  • forms Diocesan Teen Council 
  • leads opening prayer for the first ever Revs vs. Sems basketball game annual fundraiser to support the diocesan Office of Vocations

2012

  • Dedicates new Our Lady of Refuge Parish; elevates Chinese Community to Mission

2013

  • Renames St. Patrick’s Proto-Cathedral as Our Lady of La Vang; approves Immaculate Heart of Mary Oratory to serve as the center for the Extraordinary Form of the Mass for the diocese.

2014

  • PJ's 25th Episcopal Ordination Anniversary

2015

  • First Quo Vadis Retreat for Teen Vocation Discernment

2016

  • Pope Benedict XVI resigns from public papal duties; Pope Francis succeeds. 
  • celebrates the first diocesan Simbang Gabi Mass

2017

  • forms first Muslim-Catholic Council with local Muslim leaders

2018

  • Rededicates historical Holy Cross parish. Retires at 20th DSJ Episcopal Anniversary.
