Megan Sullivan, Curriculum and Professional Learning Developer for Loyola Marymount University, former Catholic school educator in the Diocese of San José
In the final few paragraphs of his encyclical, Pope Leo asked us to be weavers of hope. [This is much like how the panelists] asked us to be advocates for this work, to find our own personal agency, wherever that may be. It gives me hope that we continue to open up the conversation so that we're able to make a bigger difference – not just to the powers that have control over these technologies, but to the individuals that have a formative impact on our students.
Yuritzi Vargas, Holy Family
I loved how [panelist] Chloe spoke about being able to imagine the world — not just have the companies imagining the world — but us, as a community of faithful Catholics, also imagining and helping to co-create the world we will be living in in the future.
German Scipioni, Holy Spirit
[I heard] how we can actually use AI to benefit humanity and bring the human part of what makes us human, so we can use it to help the vulnerable, to help people. And that's the really interesting part. And I heard perspectives from priests, laypeople, experts, theologians, etc. It was all there.
Giuseppe Tanzi, Director of enrollment and marketing at Saint Clare School, Holy Spirit Parish
Just the fact that we're talking about it here today and that this is only the beginning of a much broader effort and conversation is definitely something that brings me a lot of hope and relief that we are in the position we are right now.
Anne Skeet, Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, Saint Martin of Tours
A number of panelists talked about the need to preserve human connection, and for us to continue to stay in dialogue about this very important topic. They spoke about the need to make good choices and accept our personal responsibility in this moment for the technology we use and how we use it. We must exercise our human agency to speak up, stay in those connections and conversations with each other, and to be clear about the choices that we're making.
Adriana Debabneh, Director of enrollment and marketing at Most Holy Trinity, Our Lady of Peace
It was important to me to attend as a new mom with a child that is going to be raised in this revolution. Bishop mentioned that we have to seek the truth, stay in the truth, and live our values; faith is the most important thing for me because it will help my child discern how to use these tools. As a person who believes in God, being able to use, discern, and have knowledge so I can use these tools properly gives me a lot of hope.
Angela Ikeme, Saint Catherine, Nigerian Igbo Catholic Community San José
Since we have this technology, how do we utilize it to the best of our ability to save the human race? To use it to serve our neighbors, children, the vulnerable, migrants, everyone — no one left behind? We must use it the way God has designed us to be. Magnifica Humanitas is a beautiful document, and I cannot wait to take the conversation back into my community.
Jose Hidalgo, Our Lady of Peace
AI is a tsunami coming our way: it is THE topic. And I'm excited that the Catholic Church is having all these meetings and sessions so that everybody can really learn about it. There are a lot of questions, there is a lot of anxiety, and there is a lot of hope. There are many mixed feelings towards AI. So, it is great to have the Church’s opinion on it and how we can move forward.
Jerome Placido, Immaculate Heart of Mary Oratory
It was very consistent across all the panelists that there is a specific role for everyone in our community, not just those in technology. I happen to be in technology myself. I actually happen to work at an AI company, but you know, the homeschooling mom at home, or the teacher at school, or the businessman who owns a small business: all of them have a part in forming this essentially new world, the world being remade in this digital revolution.
